Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

What is Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an effective complimentary medical practice to alleviate pain and treat a variety of conditions. Acupuncture can correct imbalances in the body and promote self-healing allowing for smooth flow of vital energy called Qi to nourish the cells of our body. Health is influenced by the quantity, quality and balance of Qi. There are various form of qi that include oxygen, nutrients and blood.

Acupuncture can improve the immune system and increase the body’s overall vitality. When there is a blockage in one part of the body, the flow of Qi becomes restricted in other parts. This can be detrimental to a person’s health, cutting off vital nourishment to the body, organs and glands. On its own, pain, disease or illness can occur. Qi is affected by physical and emotional trauma, stress, sedentary lifestyle, overexertion, seasonal changes, poor diet, accidents, or excessive activity.

When the body isn’t receiving proper blood flow it can’t function or heal properly. Acupuncture dilates the blood vessels to increase blood flow to the stimulated areas of the body. This increases organ function, relieves pain and slows the aging process. Acupuncture also stimulates the nervous system to naturally relieve pain.

Our TCM Acupuncturists Help Identify and Resolve Issues

Your Acupuncturist determines the specific imbalances or blockages to effectively diagnose and prepare treatment plan individualized for your optimal health. Using fine sterile needles that penetrate the skin on specific points along the meridian pathways your acupuncturist unblocks the channels and balances qi allowing for proper circulation. Your body at a cellular level can then receive proper nourishment.

Acupuncture helps reduce inflammation, stress, anxiety, depression, migraines and chronic pain. Acupuncture can treat insomnia, balance hormones, infertility, digestion, mood disorders, emotions, gynaecological issues and benefit those in recovery management. You can receive acupuncture treatments to improve and maintain your overall health in general. TCM is based on a preventative practice.

Complete Concussion Management

What is Complete Concussion Management?

Complete Concussion Management is a network of trained multidisciplinary healthcare practitioners that collaborate with physicians to co-manage concussion injuries, helping patients and athletes safely return to learn, work and play.

What is a Concussion?

A concussion is caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain, following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. One common misconception is that someone must be hit in the head to cause a concussion; however, a significant enough hit to the body may cause a whiplash effect and result in enough force to the brain to cause a concussion.

What Are the Symptoms of a Concussion?

A concussion causes the brain cells to become excited initially, followed by an extreme drop in energy. This may result in any of the following symptoms:

  • Loss of consciousness (more than 90% of concussions do not result in loss of consciousness)
  • Headache or pressure in the head
  • Neck pain or whiplash
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Balance problems
  • Feeling tired, fatigue, slowed down, drowsy or having no energy
  • Feeling “foggy” or not thinking clearly
  • Not feeling right or feeling off
  • More emotional
  • Feeling sad, upset or angry
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty reading or working at a computer
  • Difficulty remembering or concentrating
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Sleeping more or sleeping less
  • Irritability

Visual Signs of a Concussion May Include:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Lying motionless on the field or ice
  • Disorientation or inability to respond to questions
  • Blank or vacant stare
  • Balance, slowed movement, stumbling or incoordination
  • Clutching head
  • Slow to get up after a hit to the head or body

If you experience any one of these symptoms following a significant impact to the head or body, then you should have a high suspicion of concussion. When in doubt, sit them out!

Treatment Options for Concussions

During the early stages following injury, relative physical and cognitive rest is recommended for 24 to 48 hours; however, these decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. Following a short period of rest, treatment and rehabilitation may include a gradual increase in mental and physical activity. If symptoms persist beyond 10 days, exercise therapy, manual therapy of the neck, diet and nutritional interventions, and vestibular and visual rehabilitation are proven to be effective treatment and rehabilitation options.

Active Release Technique®

What is Active Release Technique®?

ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves.  The technique was developed by Dr. Leahy when he realized that many chiropractic patients’ symptoms were related to changes in their soft tissue.  By experimenting with how these specific soft tissues responded to focused soft tissue techniques, he created muscle, ligament, and nerve protocols which now make up the ART system.

How Does Active Release Technique® Work?

ART is effectively used to treat a variety of conditions such as headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, knee problems, plantar fasciitis, and more.  These conditions all have an important thing in common:  they are often a result of overused muscles.  Overuse conditions can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area.  This prevents tissues from moving freely, and eventually muscles become shorter and weaker.

ART sessions involve a combination of examination and treatment.  Tissues are manually evaluated for texture, tightness, and movement prior to treatment.  Abnormal tissues are treated by applying tension to the affected area with as specific movements are performed.

Acupuncture Treatments in Bedford

Acupuncture Treatments

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points along the body.  It is an effective, pain-free, treatment modality based on the concepts of neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and pathophysiology.  Acupuncture is often used in combination with other forms of treatment, such as chiropractic manipulation or mobilization, and soft tissue therapy.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture has been an effective form of alternative therapy used for thousands of years and has a very low occurrence of complications.  The needles are sterile and disposable, which means they are only used once.  Your therapist will discuss any concerns or contraindications prior to treatment.

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the body that are responsible for relieving pain and tight muscles, improving blood circulation and tissue healing, and decreasing inflammation and overall stress.  These benefits are often enhanced through mechanical or electrical stimulation.  A typical treatment takes 20-30 minutes, depending on your condition.
